Dongnipmun Gate was constructed in 1898 through the initiative of Dr. Seo Jae-pil and on the site of Yeongeunmun Gate, which was the symbol of the submissive diplomacy of Korea. With a view to inspiring the spirit of independence, Yeongeunmun Gate was demolished and in its place, Dongnibmun Gate, resembling Paris' Arc De Triumph, was built. Dongnibmun Gate was moved 70 m northwest of the original site because of the construction of Seongsandaero Road in 1979.
